Nikola Novakovic

February 21, 2022

Nikola “Nik” Novaković, age 73, peacefully passed away on February 21, 2022, surrounded by loved ones after a courageous fight with illness.  Nikola was born to his late parents, Stevo and Draga, in the little ‘selo’ of Bjelovac of the Banija region in the ‘old country’, former Yugoslavia.  As a young man, he journeyed to America for opportunity in 1968.  He landed on the Southeast side of Chicago, Illinois near other family.  Thereafter, he sought out and obtained work in Chicago production plants which, ultimately, brought him to a career in the automotive industry with General Motors.  Nikola found pride in being a UAW member in his time with GM retiring from the Fort Wayne Truck Assembly plant in Roanoke, Indiana after 37-years of employment.

Nikola married a kind and lovely lady, Jelena Kljajić, April 27, 1974.  In their union, they were blessed to have 3 children.  He took pride in teaching and involving his children in the ‘old country’ traditions and telling stories of humbled beginnings.  Family trips were taken anywhere a line could be cast!  Nikola could often be found tinkering in the garage.  He had a knack for fixing and constructing; all in a determined, methodical and detailed approach.   He found peace in yard and garden work, admiring the fruits of nature.

Nikola’s fondest times were simply those spent with his family.  Especially his grandchildren.  He will be remembered with love long after his passing as a beloved husband, father and grandfather.  A very strong, reliant man with a good heart.

Nikola is survived by his wife, Jelena of 47 years; his daughter Bogdanka (Lahcen) Amor; his daughter Dušanka Donley; his son Stevo (Antoinette) Novakovic; his 8 grandchildren Danijela Donley, Saša Donley, Nikolina Sarff, Idris Amor, Jasmina Amor, Nikola Novaković, Milana Novaković and Natilija Novaković.  He is preceded in death by his sister, Anka Novaković; and his parents.
