Helia O'Hearon

Helia O’Hearon, age 80, of Portage Indiana, was “Promoted to Glory” on Tuesday, January 5, 2022. She was a resident at Miller’s Merry Manor in Portage for four years enjoying the fellowship of many residents including Charlie, Ron and Ruth.

She was born on November 11, 1941, to Leo & Ailie Mallett of Duluth Minnesota. Helia had two brothers, Oliver and John, and two sisters Gwendolyn and Kathryn.

Helia graduated from Duluth Central High School. She married Michael O’Hearon August 4, 1962 and later they attended The Salvation Army College for Officer’s Training in Chicago, Illinois. They ministered at Salvation Army locations in Fargo, North Dakota, Rochester, Minnesota, Kirksville, MO and Hastings, Nebraska.

Helia loved the Lord which was evident in her service to Him and in her day to day life of loving and caring for others. Her sons have said over the years “thank you for all you do” “I love you so much” “I can’t thank you enough” “I couldn’t ask for a better mom” “you did an awesome job raising us” “the older I get the more I realize what a super job you did raising your boys” thank you mom for all you’ve done for me.

Preceded in death by her parents, one sister Gwendolyn, one brother, Oliver and one son, Keith John O’Hearon.

Surviving Kathryn Amberger of West Point Iowa, Brother John (Arcilia) Mallett of Merrillville, In. Sons Patrick of Kokomo, In, Daniel and Shawn of Florida and grandchildren KeeJoh, Kristopher, Freedom, Ashley, Tanya and several great grandchildren.

Helia was a Salvation Army officer for several years during the 60’s. She was the director of The Salvation Army Forever Fifty (Senior Citizens program) in Duluth Minnesota planning weekly meals and programs for seniors. Helia planned fun an enjoyable trips for them to enjoy in various parts of the country.  She also worked at nursing homes in Texas and California. Helia came to Merrillville in 2012 to visit her brother and ended up staying in the area until she passed.

Visitation will be on Friday, January 14, 2022 from 4pm to 7pm.at the Calumet Park Chapel located at 7535 Taft Street in Merrillville, In.  A celebration of her life will begin at 6:15 pm.
