March 4th, 1942 - February 25th, 2022

Dean Johnson, an owner & founder of Dean's Auto Repair, Inc. & long time resident of Merrillville, IN, passed away unexpectedly on February 25th, 2022 at the age of 79 while he was in Florida. Dean is survived by his loving wife of 58 1/2 years, Beverly Johnson (nee Brechner); his children: Charles (Vicky) Johnson, Carey Johnson-Young, and Cathy (Steven) Bell; grandchildren: Dylan & Mytchel Galoozis, Taylor & Sydney Young, Aiden Johnson, Brandon (Chelsey) Bell, Aaron (Stancie) Bell, Cameron Bell, Meaghan Bledsoe, and Kyle Stone; great-grandchildren: Jackson Bell, Jordan & Chelsea Bledsoe; and many nieces, nephews, friends, and his beloved cat, Batman.

He is preceded in death by his parents Charles and Cartha (nee Luedtke) Johnson, son-in-law David Young, and Grandchild Mallory Stone.

Dean was born in Gary in March of 1942 to Charles and Cartha (nee Luedtke) Johnson. He attended Lew Wallace High School in Gary. In August of 1963 he married Beverly (nee Brechner). They had three children, one son & two daughters. Dean was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed any and all types of adventures. He was always on the go and always willing to lend a hand. His generosity was bountiful, his heart was full of love and his smile was contagious. He was a very dedicated and hardworking soul. His life was never boring. He enjoyed working on cars, drag racing, sand racing, snowmobiling, boating, bike riding, camping, RVing, and laughing with his family and many friends he has met along the way.

He was a member of the Moose Lodge, FMCA, Hoosier Cruisers, and The First Presbyterian Church of Merrillville. He was a former member of ASA and Auxiliary Coast Guard.

Dean was known for being the man with all the gadgets. Everyone who knew him, knew that he was always involved in a new project. Always on the move and always facing each day with a positive outlook.

Dean was a 5 1/2 year survivor of pancreatic cancer, he was diagnosed in July of 2016. Instead of giving up, he had decided to push forward. His determination and positivity were what guided him through some of his darkest moments while he was undergoing his lengthy treatments and his whipple surgery. He fought diligently and with the help of God, his dedicated family, doctors at the University of Chicago, and the many prayers, he beat this cancer and was once again up and running.

Dean was a driven entrepreneur with an unmatched work ethic. He loved working with his hands. From working for Don Barclay's Marathon Station in 1963 in Gary, IN to owning his own Marathon filling station in 1964 in Merrillville, IN. Also employed by C&L in Gary, IN, Shaver's Chevy 1968-1981 in Gary/Merrillville, IN. as a mechanic and a general manager and then body shop manager. He then decided to open up his own auto repair and body shop facility in June of 1981. Dean along with his wife Beverly founded Dean's Auto Repair in Merrillville, IN along with their son, Charles.

Dean will be remembered as a strong, fun loving, big smiling, hardworking, dedicated, non stopping, generous, God-loving, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He will be dearly missed and always with us with the many memories we have had the pleasure to make along this life's journey.

Visitation will be held on Friday, March 25th, from 2-8 PM at Calumet Park Funeral Chapel, 7535 Taft St, Merrillville, IN 46410. Funeral Service will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, March 26th at the Funeral Chapel, with Dean's nephew Keith Barclay officiating.

The Family requests in lieu of flowers, that donations be given in Dean's name to First Presbyterian Church of Merrillville or to T2T.org (Tunnel of Towers).
