Anthony S. Azcona

Anthony “Tony” S. Azcona, sixty-five years of age, from Merrillville, Indiana but recently relocated to Winamac, Indiana, passed away on September 16, 2021, to join the love of his life, his wife Cheryl, in bosom of God’s love in heaven.
Originally hailing from Gary, Tony matriculated from Wirt High School, though he would always claim old Horace Mann. He attended Purdue University, where along the way he met the love of his wife, Cheryl, then a student at Valparaiso University. As the story goes, they met while packed inside a car on the way to a bacchanal. Cheryl was so taken by Tony that she later wrote him a letter expressing as much. A whirlwind romance ensued, and they married in 1978. Soon thereafter they were joined by two sons, Anthony Sebastian in 1981 and Alan Christian in 1983. (For those wondering, yes, he did manage to graduate with a bachelors from Purdue)
Tony’s next greatest happiness came when he became a grandparent when Sara was born in 2009. He embraced his role as the paterfamilias, taking every opportunity to spoil his granddaughter. He joy was further increasedwhen his second granddaughter, Oliva was born in 2012.More grandparent doting ensued.
There were jobs to be sure, ranging from selling HiFi equipment to setting records loading long haul trailers to creating nth level accounting to trying his hand at driving those very long-haul trailers; but Tony would much rather we discuss his passions, interests, and clubs than his employment. And let’s be honest, who wants to talk about work right now?
Anyone who met Tony would quickly learn of his first passion after his family were the whimsical, charming, and occasionally reliable (though more likely not) Little British Cars. Whether a sleek Austin Healey roadster or a quirky Hillman sedan, all were deemed the best cars to ever putter down the vast stretches of American asphalt. Tonywas known to remark that he did own “foreign cars,” whilst gesticulating at his Ford pickup. He was always willing to help those who needed technical assistance or assist anyone about to buy a car on what to watch out for or what to expect. Tony lived the phrase “pay it forward” by freely sharing his love of the cars by helping anyone and everyone.
Tony was active in his community, whether a citizens committee, to the local school board, attending his sons’ athletic and academic excursions, lending his neighbors a hand with a project, and lastly his membership shared with Cheryl with the Lions. You could attend any Lions event and seldom miss Tony and Cheryl helping out; they shared a love of service to the community. They were fixtures among the Hobart Lions, throwing themselves wholeheartedly into the group.
The common underlying theme here is that you’d alwayssee both Tony and Cheryl together, including their active participation with Trinity Lutheran Church. Always willing to volunteer to assist with anything to assist the congregation, they also assumed leadership roles with the church to help guide their community. Nothing was considered too trivial, whether it was helping staple down a drop cloth on the church’s parade float or helping organize fundraising events.
Tony is survived by his sons Anthony and Alan and his two granddaughters Sara and Oliva. He is survived by his sister Elizabeth, and brothers Alexander and Edward; his nieces Lilly and Alexandra, and his grandniece Emily and grandnephews Julian “JuJu” and Christopher.
Preceded in death by his parents Anthony and Cirilla, parents-in-law Howard and Mildred, and the love of his life, Cheryl.
