Alfred “Fred” Gonzalez, age 68, of Gary, IN, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 29, 2020. Fred was a graduate of Calumet High School and served in the U.S. Army where he was stationed in Hawaii from 1972-1974. He is survived by his mother, Helen M. Gonzalez; brother, Mario Gonzalez; sister, Aurora Adame; son, Freddy (Nicole) Gonzalez; daughters: Dominique & Elena Gonzalez; grandchild, Anayeli Diaz. Fred is also survived by several nieces and nephews and former spouses: Mary T. Gonzalez and Tencia Sajkich

Preceeded in death by his father, Lorenzo C. Gonzalez, brother, Enrique Gonzalez and daughter, Christina Eliza Gonzalez.

Fred grew up in Black Oak Indiana where he served as an altar boy at St. Ann’s Church. He went on to work at Design Dinette in Hickory Hills, IL. Fred loved music and playing the keyboard.  A self-taught musician, he formed the band Straight Up and enjoyed performing.

Fred also loved building but most of all babysitting his granddaughter who called him Papa Guapo.

He will be greatly missed for his warm, friendly smile, his everyday jokes, and him asking “Why is he so guapo?”.  Fred was well liked because he was so friendly. He will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Visitation will take place on Wednesday, June 3, 2020 at Rendina Funeral Home (5100 Cleveland St., Gary, IN) from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. with a prayer service officiated by Rev. James Meade at 3:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Thursday, June 4, 2020, 10:00 a.m. at S.S. Peter & Paul Catholic Church (5885 Harrison St., Merrillville, IN). A short visitation will be held at the church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of mass. Interment Ridgelawn Cemetery. At the request of Fred’s family, guests are asked to please wear a face mask while visiting funeral home and church. Visitation will be limited and guests are encouraged to keep social distancing at 6 feet.  For information please call 219-980-1141.
