Memorial Weekend at Calumet Park Cemetery quiet due to COVID-19…
For the first time in 92 years, Calumet Park Cemetery had to cancel all Memorial Weekend activities. Normally, around 5,000 – 6,000 cars enter the cemetery over the course of the weekend, considered by many as the weekend that is the unofficial start of summer. Some come to plant flowers, some to honor and remember their loved ones, and many for the different events, from church remembrances to a free fireworks show to the main gathering in the Veterans Section to honor fallen soldiers.
If you need help finding a loved one’s final resting place, stop in at the office (mask please, for everyone’s health) or call 219.769.8803. If you have a smart phone, simply go to our website at mycalumetpark.com and follow the prompts using Gravefinder. You will need your section and lot number to use the Gravefinder app. For Calumet Park to look up the locations, they would need the deed holder’s name or the name of the deceased. The Gravefinder app does not allow the entry of a name as part of the search. Once you enter this minimal information, Google Maps will direct you to within 5-6 feet of your desired location.
Note: UNLESS SOMETHING CHANGES REGARDING THE COVID-19 VIRUS, THE ANNUAL FISHING EVENT NORMALLY HELD IN JUNE AND THE BUTTERFLY RELEASE PROGRAM IN JULY WILL BE CANCELED. HOPEFULLY, OUR THIRD ANNUAL 5K WALK/RUN EVENT IN SEPTEMBER WILL BE HELD as scheduled on September 26.
IT IS SUGGESTED THAT YOU CHECK WITH THE OFFICE AS TIME APPROACHES FOR DIFFERENT EVENTS TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU WISH ATTEND IF THEY ARE HELD. ALSO, CHECK OUR WEBSITE AND FACEBOOK PAGES FOR UPDATES.
So sorry that we could not see you at this year’s Memorial Weekend. Hopefully, we will make up for it at next year’s Memorial Weekend.
