Donald Barclay

May 07, 2020

Donald E. Barclay passed away in his home May 7th, 2020. Don, as he was known to all of us, lived a full life. He married his grade school sweetheart and they shared 63 years together until she preceded him in death a little over three years ago. After 63 years with someone, you do not recover easily when they are gone, and not a day passed that Don did not mourn Shirley’s passing.

Don was a son, brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend to many. His family and friends were the recipients of his generosity. His work ethic was exemplary. He loved working with his hands. From the steel mills to owning his own ‘filling’ station; to working as a mechanic and service writer at Shaver’s Chevy to finishing his work career working for Dean’s Auto Repair, Don did not cheat his employer or his customers.

Don loved sports. He was a three sport athlete in high school, continued to participate in sports following graduation, playing softball and golf. He encouraged his sons, grandsons and great- grandsons as they played various sports. He was never too tired to play catch, offer tips and build various apparatus to help them succeed . He would even prepare an ice rink in his back yard with lights, music and hockey equipment for the family and neighborhood kids to use.

He loved the Cubs, Bears and Bulls. College basketball took a close second place. Earlier in life he and Shirley were frequent visitors to Merrillville High School football and basketball games.

You may remember Don for a reasons different than above. But I am certain Don would want you remember him as honest, hard-working and a many who sacrificially loved his family and friends.
