Raymond Casalin

June 26th, 2019

Raymond Casalin, age 90, of St. John, IN passed away on Wednesday, June 26, 2019 with his loving family by his side.  Raymond was a fun-loving, hard working, silly and sweet man with a heart of gold. His infectious personality and his zest for life were undeniable and his sense of humor was unmistakable. Everyone loved to be around him. He could make you laugh and feel welcomed within just a few words. Because of this trait, Ray made friends easily. He talked to everyone, everywhere he went. Ray had a passion for life, and wasn't going to let age or pain be a factor in slowing him down. Ray was often hanging out with his buddies at McDonald's. Even as the cancer began to invade his body and the pain began to grow, Ray would jump in the car to meet the "boys". These friends were Raymond's go to guys. He discussed everything with them, from how to fix a lawn mower to repairing the bathroom shower inside the house. Nothing stopped Ray. Ray also loved hanging out in his garage, working on projects or trying to get up on his riding mower to cut the grass. His energy and love for life was never ending.

As a family man, Ray's wife, children and grandchildren were his life. There wasn't anything that he wouldn't do for any of them. Raymond stepped in to be a father figure to many of his grandchildren and taught them the meaning of hard work and pride. His favorite saying was if you can't do it right don't do it at all. He sacrificed his life for his family and he truly loved being around them.

Like his father, who migrated from Italy, Ray was a master craftsman. Raymond was a retired Union Carpenter, where he met his lifelong buddy Joe, a friend until the end. He could take a piece of scrap wood and turn it into a piece of art. Raymond built some of the homes hi s family lived in. His creativity was displayed throughout with beautifully stained picture frames to wooden coffee tables all created from scratch. There wasn't' anything that he couldn't build.

Raymond was true to his faith and attended services every Sunday at St. John Evangelist Roman Catholic Church. He was proud to serve with the United States Marines during WWII and Korean War. Just a few years back he had the opportunity to join the honor flight Chicago and traveled to Washington D.C. with his Veteran buddies, an experience he talked about often.

Ray was married to his beloved Rosalee for almost 69 years. He was an amazing and loving father, and grandfather. His hobbies included traveling, fishing, working in the yard, playing cards, watching John Wayne cowboy movies, singing old Dean Martin or Italian songs, making people laugh and taking care of his family. Ray had a sensitive soul often tearing up when he was deeply moved, both in sad times and happy times. Ray is going to be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. You are with us now and forever. Until we meet again. We love you!

Raymond is survived by his loving wife of almost 69 years; Rosalee, son; Michael Casalin, daughters; Susan Kilbourne (Jay Hanson) and Sandy Casalin, grandchildren; John Kilbourne, Lauren Kilbourne, Shannon Bircher (Joe), Amber Casalin, many great grandchildren and great, great, grandchildren and his beloved sister; Mary Van Cura.

Raymond is preceded in death by his parents;  Allessandro and Clorinda Casalin, son; Mark Casalin, grandson; Darrel Kilbourne, sisters; Jean Di Luigi, Minnie Smith, and Elsie Loch.
